Melasma occur mainly in the facial, hand and throat area, but also in other parts of the body. It occurs more often in women with darker skin. The main causes of skin discolorations are excessive exposure to the sun, as well as some hormonal factors. Another common cause is the appearance of melasma during pregnancy and primarily in the face.
