Liposuction – What is it?

Liposculpture is an innovative, quick, and safe procedure to achieve the body you have always dreamed of. The body structure varies from person to person. Fat is not always distributed symmetrically, resulting in what is known as “localized fat,” which causes aesthetic asymmetries. Certain areas where fat deposits occur are particularly resistant to exercise or diet. The “problem areas” in a woman’s body are usually the belly, thighs, and buttocks. In men, localized fat is typically found in the belly and chest. Unfortunately, this issue cannot be corrected through weight loss. On the contrary, fat deposits can become more pronounced in some cases when we lose weight. In plastic surgery, sculpting retains its artistic meaning but is enriched with medical knowledge.

The advanced form of liposuction in modern plastic surgery is liposculpture. In liposculpture (or fat transfer), fat is removed from areas with localized fat. During this process, special needles are used to remove excess fat, and after processing it, it is reinserted into areas that need enlargement to create more attractive proportions, such as the breasts, buttocks, and even the cheekbones on the face. We humorously say that “love handles,” the fat on the inner thighs, belly, and arms, are a natural prosthetic material produced by our bodies. Therefore, we can correct our imperfections naturally without resorting to foreign artificial substances, which can lead to failures and side effects. Even though a significant amount of fat is removed using the liposculpture technique, we do not face issues of sagging or surface asymmetries in the skin. Additionally, there is no pain or swelling, except for very minimal bruising.

Who is suitable for liposculpture?

Here we must emphasize that a healthy diet and exercise cannot replace liposculpture. To achieve a good result, we should be 7-8 kilos away from our normal weight. Therefore, the ideal candidate is one who maintains a stable body weight and is willing to adopt a healthy lifestyle after the procedure, with a balanced diet, regular physical exercise, no smoking, and as little alcohol consumption as possible.

Additionally, the condition of the muscles and the elasticity of the skin are taken into account by the plastic surgeon. Liposculpture is not used for weight loss, but to tighten areas that already have good elasticity. All of the above are necessary in order to maintain a good result after a liposculpture procedure. The surgery is not suitable for people who suffer from serious health problems such as diabetes or heart diseases.

Differences between liposculpting and liposuction

When someone needs to remove a quantity of fat that resists exercise and diet, they choose the solution of liposuction. On the other hand, liposculpture is a more sophisticated type of liposuction, as the fat that is removed is used to enhance the curves in other parts of the body. During this procedure, the plastic surgeon treats the body as a whole. By focusing on the details, they reshape it, filling in the areas that need to be emphasized with the fat removed from other areas that had excess. In short, during liposculpture, fat is transferred from one or more points of the body to other neighboring areas that are lacking. This results in a much more attractive body contour and an overall improved appearance.

Lipolysis vs hyaluronic acid

The results of the corrections made to the body with the addition of fat have a very long lifespan, reaching up to a decade. This is a significant advantage of liposculpting compared to other treatments, as all forms of hyaluronic acid used last at most 18 months. Viewed from an economic perspective, the method of liposculpting is the most cost-effective, as the amount of hyaluronic acid that would be necessary over a decade is large and therefore expensive. Additionally, the use of fat from our own body makes the process very safe, as it is impossible to experience an allergic reaction since the material comes from our own body.

Are there risks or side effects?

Complications after liposculpting are rare. The most common side effects are dimpling of the skin and tightness. Less common but serious side effects include the following. If you experience any of these, consult your doctor:

  • Bad reaction to anesthesia
  • Blood clot or seroma
  • Permanent changes in skin color
  • Infection or bleeding
  • Scars above or below the skin
  • Changes in sensation in the skin

What is the procedure of the intervention?

ιατρείο για λιπογλυπτική
As we already know, during liposuction, fat is removed from areas of the body where it is excess. The plastic surgeon collects this fat and may later reposition it to other areas of the body, depending on the specific needs. For example, fat can be transferred from the abdominal area to the calves, making them more shapely and symmetrical. More specifically, during lipofilling, you will receive local anesthesia and may be administered oral sedation. If the area is larger, you will receive general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Most surgeons use the tumescent technique, which helps limit blood loss and scarring. Through very small incisions, a metal cannula or a small tube is placed in the subcutaneous tissue. From this cannula, a solution of saline, with adrenaline and a local anesthetic, is injected to avoid pain and bruising. The fat cells are now more fragile and liquid, making their removal less painful. After the fat is removed, it undergoes a suitable procedure (centrifugation, purification, and concentration) for the purpose of being reinjected into other areas of the body, correcting imperfections. The procedure usually lasts from one to four hours, depending on the extent and the areas we want to treat. The patient can return home two to three hours after the procedure. Usually, one treatment is sufficient to achieve the desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liposculpture – FAQ

Can cellulite disappear with the method of liposculpture?

Most women face the problem of cellulite, which is due to various factors. Cellulite is visually recognized either by small dimples or by small bumps, but the most common appearance is that of orange peel. With liposculpture, the problem can be greatly improved by adding or removing the necessary fat. Additionally, the adhered skin responsible for the appearance of orange peel is detached. However, this does not mean that cellulite will not appear again, as liposculpture does not address the underlying cause of the problem.

What is the amount of fat that we can remove in a liposuction procedure?

It has been reported many times that liposuction is not a weight-loss method, but a procedure for reshaping our body contours. Therefore, the amount of fat that will be removed to achieve the right result is such that it maintains a proper proportion with the rest of the body and does not cause the skin to sag due to lack of volume support in the area being treated. Of course, the risk of skin laxity varies from area to area on our body. For example, more fat can be removed from the sides of the abdomen and the hips compared to the inner thigh area.

Is liposculpting alone enough to improve my silhouette? What procedure can I follow to better highlight the results of the surgery?

Due to the fact that liposculpture primarily targets healthy and slim individuals, proper nutrition and regular physical exercise can enhance the results. When liposculpture is performed on individuals with significant sagging, usually due to obesity, other techniques that assist are also used. In cases where the sagging is minimal, needling can be employed alongside liposculpture, helping to produce collagen and improve skin elasticity. Another technique is the injection of stem cells with nano fat grafting, which rejuvenates the skin from the inside out. In cases where the issue of sagging is much greater, procedures such as breast lift, abdominoplasty, and lower body lift are necessarily combined with liposculpture to achieve a beautiful and balanced result.

How is liposculpting used on the face?

By applying a small liposuction to the face, small lumps can be removed, as well as reshaping the area under the chin (double chin). Then, the fat that is removed can be used to increase volume in the cheekbones, lips, nasolabial folds, lower jaw, and eyelids.
